History

Lower Valley was one of the first trained ambulance services in Western Pennsylvania, founded in 1973. Prior to Lower Valley and dedicated EMS agencies, members of the public relied on good Samaritans, police, or firefighters to transport them to the hospital in event of emergency. Modern EMS in the Pittsburgh region started with Freedom House Ambulance Service in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, which ran until it was absorbed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1975
